Still running old firmware? Now’s the perfect time for iPhone 1.1.2 upgrade.
iPhone 1.1.2 is the current iPhone firmware. If you’re running something older, you’re missing out on: a bunch of bug fixes and improvements to Safari, seeing your battery charge in iTunes, ringtones, and if for those outside the US, vastly improved international support. 1.1.3 isn’t out, much less cracked. If you’re still running old firmware, now’s the perfect time to upgrade to 1.1.2, because the new iNdependence makes it damn easy.
iNdependence has always been the caviar of Mac jailbreaking tools. We’ve used iBrickr, Oktoprep, and everything else, but nothing else comes close. Here’s why:
- iNdependence is an all one tool for activation, jailbreaking, and can install AnySIM too.
- It has simple to follow, official documentation included in the actual app. No hunting round crappy registration-based forums for advice that doesn’t work.
- It explains not just how to activate, jailbreak and unlock, but also why things work the way they do. That error 1013 iTunes gives when downgrading? Rather than just brushing this off as ‘normal’, iNdependence actually explains that iTunes is complaining about being unable to downgrade your firmware.
If you’ve been turned off upgrading to iPhone 1.1.2 in the past, it’s easy to understand why. Oktoprep has spotty documentation, and TUAW originally surprised PowerPC users originally by mentioning they needed an Intel Mac about halfway through the upgrade process. Thanks guys.
We’re currently running an activated, unlocked iPhone on firmware 1.1.2 in Australia, with third party apps, Australian localization, and everything working 100%. And iNdependence made it easy.
One note: If you previously unlocked your iPhone using old versions of AnySIM or iUnlock on firmware 1.0, your iPhone’s seczone may be damaged. You’ll need to use the RevirginizingTool first to work with firmware 1.1 or any future updates. This just involves running a few commands on your iPhone to restore the damaged area.
iNdependence’s online help guides you through the 1.1.2 process, which is simply:
- Shift Restore (or Apple Restore) to 1.02 in iTunes. At the end you’ll be given a error 1013.
- Open iNdependence, and use it to Activate, jailbreak, install SSH and run the Pre-upgrade steps.
- Upgrade to 1.1.2 in iTunes
- Open iNdependence, and use it to Activate and install SSH (and AnySIM if you wish) again
That’s all. One think InDependence doesn’t do is add Installer. Just download Installer and use Fugu to copy just the Springboard.app from the archive into /Applications on your iPhone. Restart iPhone.
Start Installer, and install:
- Springboard - needed to allow multiple screens and themes.
- If you’re outside the US you’ll also need iWorld - this fixes a 1.1.2 specific issue with the SMS app crashing in non-US locales. Run it once, then uninstall it.
- Your favorite apps. Update: check out our guide to native iPhone apps.
Easy as pie.

Agreed. Although your advice came about 7 hours too late. I f’d around all day with Oktoprep and jailbreakme.com and copying copying obscure lib files to usr/local/ and none of it worked. I started out with iNdependence, and it is with them that I’ll stay. CHEERS to all for their hard work!
