It might be worth noting that instead of disabling windows firewall and making it vulnerable to possible attacks, that you can choose exceptions and allow remote desktop AND keep the firewall doing what it needs to do to protect windows.
Cheers,

This is an absolutely awesome article.. but I had to read the entire thing over a couple of times and it definately took me more than 10 minutes... a quick rewrite with solutions to the popular problems would make this a lot smoother for newbies... like me!

Thanks a bunch. Too tired to play, but I'm impressed n I'll check it right out soon!!!
Cheers,

Why wouldn't we just install VirtualBox and use it in seamless mode. Installation is quite easy (deb) and you can use the Open Source Edition if that makes you more happy.

I have been using VirtualBox for a month now with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, and love the fact that I don't use VMware anymore!

The option "Start → Control Panel → User Accounts → Change the way users log on and off" was not available on my installation. I had to "Start - Control Panel - System - Computer Name - Network ID" and select that "This computer is for home use and is not part of a business network". After reboot, it was possible to change the way users log...

There is still a problem to start the task bar - running explorer.exe starts the blue screen all over my xinerama screens. Running any other application (e.g. notepad) is okey, only notepad window displays. I have the Windows Desktop disabled (after logon to VM ware console, the desktop is just blue and only the taskbar is visible). Any ideas?

Very cool! Worked quite well.

Does anyone know how I could make the a printer under linux print to windows?

I like a program called FinePrint, which there is no Linux replacement. I would like the option of starting the VM, starting rdesktop, and printing to windows/fineprint and then having it print.

Can the VM be started, log in windows and log out windows on linux startup? That way I can just start Rdesktop?

this si very slick - thanks for the tutorial! I usually have Excel, Word and Powerpoint running at the same time. That begs the question - once you have this running - how do you switch between windows apps?

Toker, I'm having the same problem as you,

"And all i get is:
Autoselected keyboard map en-gb

it just stays there and nothing apears, "

You said the fix was to "configure so that vmnet8 was the local network connected device and enable internet connection sharing"

I'm not sure what that means. Can you please help? Thanks!

Lol. Ok you can scrap the last three posts, after searching the net i found out, that because i am running firestarter, i had to configure so that vmnet8 was the local network connected device and enable internet connection sharing... Hope this help people
now i other problems.... Main problem - I am wanting to run the xp on the second workspace in full screen, so i can just press CTRL + ALT + LEFT/RIGHT and change between xp and Ubuntu, i can get it to work just the Ubuntu task bars appear when i right click on the xp desktop and causes the xp task bar to flicker, when i press the start button on xp the Ubuntu task bars appear and the Ubuntu date thing drops down from the clock.
Second problem - installing the drivers in xp.... when i try to install the sound i get an error saying "Microsoft Bus driver should be loaded in your system before installing Realtek HD audio driver !" any help? lol, also i tried to install the gfx drivers and it keeps spitting at me "one or more files needed for installation is corrupt or missing"... lol i dont ask alot so i? any help cheers. - Toker
